Every school system in the United States is looking at technology and trying to understand how they can pass benefits onto teachers, parents, students, etc. From web based grading systems that give students daily transparency into their grades to high schools that make all students use a tablet that comes preloaded with class curriculum, assignments and other apps. To school or board of education Alert systems that can share school closing, or school lock down messages with parents via text or email within minutes. Technology will not go away – instead it will become a bigger as different schools test different software and systems as a way to determine what works for their school. With all these new systems, logins, passwords, etc. and students spending more time online as a tool for home work; we have come up with key safety tips for students as you head into the new school year.
- Don’t share your password with anyone
- Use different passwords for each different system / app
- Use a reputable Password Manager app. Then put all your password / login details in the password manager. It is worth the small app fee.
- Social media activity picks up for kids during the school year – Never include home address / personal information on any social media posting
- Turn off “location serves”
- Chatrooms that have teen or youth oriented content are a breeding ground for children predators. Parents should always monitor student activity whether that be online site visits or social media postings and activity
- Cyber Bullying is a very real problem – reporting this type of activity is the right thing to do.
